The Northern Elders Forum has openly expressed remorse for their decision to align with President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

The forum acknowledges the error of supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, emphasizing the valuable lesson learnt from this misstep.

Amidst rising concerns over national security, the Northern Elders Forum has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising unity and consensus in the selection of future presidential candidates.

The recent abduction of Kuriga school children in Kaduna served as a stark reminder of the administration’s failure to safeguard its citizens.

Speaking with news media, spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman highlighted the forum’s acknowledgment of the error in supporting Tinubu’s presidency bid. With a resolve to avoid similar pitfalls in the future, the North aims to choose a candidate capable of fostering national unity and governing in the best interests of all Nigerians.

The significant voter turnout for Tinubu in the 2023 elections, particularly from the North West, North East, and North Central regions, underscores the gravity of the mistake made.

However, the forum’s introspection following this outcome signals a newfound commitment to select a candidate who embodies inclusivity and aligns with the nation’s diverse interests.

Moving forward, the North pledges to exercise caution in selecting future presidential contenders. The focus will shift towards candidates who are perceived as less controversial, more inclusive, and capable of bridging regional divides.

The experience of supporting Tinubu in 2023 serves as a catalyst for prioritising unity and consensus in the pursuit of national leadership.
