In response to mounting concerns over food insecurity in Nigeria, the Senate has advocated for the urgent implementation of a food stamps programme, aiming to provide crucial assistance to low- and no-income individuals.

The Senate, led by Chief Whip Ali Ndume and Co-Sponsor Sen. Saliu Mustapha, underscores the imperative for immediate action by the executive to mitigate the looming crisis.

During a recent session, Senator Ndume highlighted the alarming findings of the October 2023 Cadre Harmonisé Analysis, which projected that approximately 26.5 million Nigerians would face severe food insecurity in 2024.

Factors contributing to this predicament include ongoing conflicts, the adverse impacts of climate change, escalating inflation, and the depreciation of the Naira.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Senate emphasised the necessity of introducing a Nigerian version of the Food Stamps programme.

Drawing parallels with successful initiatives in other nations, such as the United States, where food stamps have been instrumental in supporting vulnerable populations since 1933, Senator Ndume stressed the urgency of implementing a comprehensive public assistance programme.

In addition to urging the Federal Government’s prompt action, the Senate mandated the Ministry of Agriculture to collaborate with development partners and stakeholders, including the Lagos Food Bank Initiative.

This collaborative approach aims to devise practical strategies and operational frameworks for the effective execution of the programme nationwide.

The motion garnered bipartisan support, with Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro highlighting the timeliness of the initiative in addressing the plight of vulnerable constituents.

Echoing similar sentiments, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar emphasised the importance of targeted distribution to ensure equitable access to food stamps.

Senator Send Sani Musa underscored the pivotal role of the programme in enhancing food security at both local and national levels.

Expressing readiness to champion similar initiatives in his constituency, Senator Solomon Adeola affirmed the significance of food stamps as a supplemental measure to existing welfare programmes.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau lauded Senator Ndume for his proactive stance on addressing pressing national issues.

Emphasising the Senate’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians, Barau affirmed the legislature’s readiness to enact measures that alleviate the hardships faced by citizens.
