In a resounding declaration, the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, affirmed the FCT Administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming Abuja into a smart city, emphasising that this mission stands firm and non-negotiable.

His statements echoed resoundingly during the Annual Media Retreat of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps held in Keffi on Sunday.

At the heart of the retreat, themed “Building an Environment that Benefits a Smart City: Healthy Café – A Step Towards Effective City Management,” lies a profound dedication to crafting an ecosystem that serves the interests of all constituents through comprehensive endeavours.

Underpinning this vision is the integration of technology, innovation, and strategic planning to foster an environment characterised by efficiency, resilience, and responsiveness to the populace’s needs.

Wike articulated that the notion of a smart city transcends mere ambition; it embodies a vital stride towards fostering sustainable urban development and elevating residents’ quality of life.

The minister highlighted pivotal initiatives, including the cultivation of accessible green spaces, the implementation of efficient waste management systems, the establishment of sustainable transport networks, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

These endeavours stand as cornerstones in realising the smart city blueprint, poised to redefine Abuja’s landscape as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and inclusive progress.

In a rallying call to residents, Wike underscored the importance of fulfilling civic obligations, including the timely settlement of taxes such as ground rent, tenement rent, and utility bills.

Simultaneously, he issued a stern admonition against flagrant violations of basic regulations, urging a collective effort in upholding civic order and fostering a city where governance and citizenship harmonise for collective advancement.

The minister implored the media fraternity to amplify these messages, galvanising collective consciousness towards a shared vision of urban excellence and communal prosperity.

Echoing Wike’s sentiments, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Mr Shehu Ahmad, unveiled plans for a comprehensive review of the Abuja Master Plan.

This initiative seeks to integrate contemporary dynamics into the city’s ongoing evolution, with district designs already earmarked for inclusion in the impending revision.

Emphasising the media’s pivotal role as agents of change, the Chairman of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps, Mr Hudu Yakubu, underscored the criticality of community engagement in the quest for a smart city.

He outlined the media’s duty in disseminating knowledge on sustainable practices, technological advancements, and civic responsibilities, thereby catalysing a collective drive towards urban excellence.
