The Divisional Officer (DPO) of Gowon Estate in Lagos State faces removal from duty after detaining Olumide Sonupe, a lawyer advocating for his client’s release on December 30 at the Moshalashi Police Station in Alimosho.

This incident, resulting in the lawyer’s hospitalization, has stirred widespread condemnation from fellow members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State branch.

Amid escalating outrage, the Lagos State Police Command swiftly responded to the allegations against the DPO.

The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, has ordered the immediate removal of the DPO, as confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement released on Wednesday.

As investigations into the matter concluded, Hundeyin clarified that the DPO’s removal is pending a comprehensive review by higher supervisory authorities.

The Command, in an effort to foster a harmonious Police-Lawyers relationship, plans to engage in a round table discussion with the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State Branch.

The incident has sparked a strong reaction from the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State branch, highlighting the need for reforms in police conduct.

Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade’s decisive action demonstrates a commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining accountability within the police force.

The DPO’s removal, pending further review, underscores the importance of ensuring that officers adhere to professional standards, safeguarding the public and legal practitioners alike.

As the Command continues to emphasize its dedication to the rule of law, this incident sheds light on the ongoing efforts to prevent similar incidents and strengthen the relationship between the police and the legal community.
