In a heartbreaking incident on Tuesday, 9th January 2024, two passenger boats navigating the Andoni-Bonny waterway in Rivers State have left over 20 individuals feared dead, as confirmed by Erastus C. Awortu, Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council.

Amidst the grief, Andoni LG Council swiftly responded to the distressing news, dispatching a rescue team to the scene in an effort to aid the survivors and recover the deceased.

Chairman Awortu expressed deep sorrow and shock, highlighting the urgent response of the local government in coordinating with initial responders for rescue operations.

The council is vigilantly monitoring the situation, with a commitment to providing support to survivors and facilitating the recovery of bodies from the sea.

The affected communities, including Ngo Town, Ataba, Isiama, and others, are in the thoughts and prayers of the local government.

Awortu assured affected families and communities that the council would take measures to alleviate the burden of grief.

While lamenting the tragic mishap during a festive season, Awortu called upon water transportation operators in Andoni to enforce strict compliance with safety regulations.

The council chairman issued a stern warning against night journeys on the sea to prevent further heartbreaking incidents.

Among the victims, Ayayi Festus, who lost his wife, four children, and grandchild, recounted the harrowing incident.

The fishing boat, his sole livelihood, was struck by a heavy wave near Bonny River, leading to a tragic division and destruction of the vessel.

Andoni Local Government Council extends its deepest condolences and pledges continued support to the affected families and communities.
