In a recent development, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army based in Maiduguri has officially confirmed the apprehension of a soldier involved in the tragic incident resulting in the death of a truck driver at a checkpoint along the Maiduguri – Dikwa- Gamboru road on Boxing Day.
Amidst the chaos, commercial drivers have staged a protest, leading to the temporary closure of the busy border road and leaving countless travellers stranded.
The incident unfolded due to a heated altercation between the soldier and the truck driver during a routine checkpoint inspection.
Following a prompt complaint from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the 7 Division initiated an investigation and promptly arrested the implicated soldier.
The Army has engaged with the NURTW, aiming for a peaceful resolution and ensuring justice for the deceased driver’s family.
The 7 Division assures both the victim’s family and the NURTW of its unwavering commitment to serving justice and upholding professional conduct within its personnel.
Lieutenant Colonel A.Y. Jingina, the 7 Division Public Relations Officer, affirmed, “The Division does not tolerate any form of unprofessional conduct, and every effort is being made to ensure justice prevails.”
Borno Government, represented by Professor Usman Tar, Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, vows to “take all necessary measures to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of suspects.”
