NIMechE urges youths to pursue career in mechanical engineering

The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Abuja Chapter, has called on youths to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering to advance the technological development of the country.

It also said that the institution has been contributing significantly to development of the mechanical engineering profession in Abuja and Nigeria at large.

Chairman of NIMechE, Abuja Chapter, Engr. Ahmed Kutigi, stated this at the 11th Annual General Meeting, with the theme titled: ‘The Role of Building Services Engineer in Energy Sector.’

He added that the institution has done and achieved so much within the few years of its existence. He noted that in spite of challenges posed to him within his tenure, members of the institution have continued to excel in their respective fields.

Kutigi said: “Mechanical engineers have significantly contributed to improving the quality of life for Nigerian people and around the world.

“Their expertise has led to the creation of life-saving medical devices, environmentally friendly technologies, and infrastructure systems that support communities locally and globally.

“There is the need to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of mechanical engineers in addressing societal needs and challenges.

“It is essential to inspire and encourage future generations (undergraduate) to pursue careers in mechanical engineering.

“By showcasing the diverse and impactful nature of this field, we can motivate young minds to explore the possibilities within mechanical engineering and embark on a path of innovation and discovery.”

He further explained that through mentorship, education, and outreach programmes, the institution could nurture a new generation of passionate Mechanical Engineers who will continue to drive progress and change.

“As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of advancing the practice of mechanical engineering in Abuja, its environs and Nigeria, while providing opportunities for professional development and networking among our members.”

He further explained that the institution would continue to collaborate with government agencies, industry partners, and other stakeholders to promote the growth of the profession and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians.

Kutigi maintained that the support of members and relevant stakeholders are crucial to the success of the institution, adding that he is grateful for their unwavering commitment to the advancement of mechanical engineering in Nigeria.

Election was conducted and the following person emerged victorious as the Executive Council Committee for the 2024/2025 Fiscal year. They include, Engr. Odama Ojeka Mathew, Chairman; Engr. Adeyinka Aderemi, Vice Chairman; Engr. Nathaniel Ajah, General Secretary.

Others, Engr. Haruna, Assistant General Secretary; Engr. (Dr.) Ogedengbr Temitayo, Technical Secretary; Engr. Olamiju Olowo, Assistant Technical Secretary; Engr. Solomon Shalegh, Financial Secretary and Engr. Chimezie Igbo, Treasurer.
