The Lagos State Government reveals a startling increase in domestic violence cases with 340 men reporting abuse by their wives in the past year.

The last year has witnessed a troubling surge in domestic violence cases in Lagos, particularly involving male victims.

The Lagos State Government, in a recent report, exposed a shocking statistic: 340 men have been victims of severe domestic violence at the hands of their wives between September 2022 and July 2023.

This alarming revelation underscores the need for increased awareness and support for all victims of domestic violence.

In a society where domestic violence has long been associated with female victims, the recent upswing in male victims is a cause for concern.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, shed light on this growing issue.

She reported that the number of men coming forward to report domestic violence incidents has surged in the past year.

Men who have experienced domestic violence at the hands of their wives face unique challenges. Many suffer in silence, fearing societal judgment or doubting the seriousness of their situations.

However, these brave individuals have begun to break the silence and seek help.

This change is not just a statistical anomaly but rather an indication of the pressing need for a shift in societal perceptions.

Increasing awareness about this issue is crucial.

It helps in recognizing that domestic violence is not confined to a single gender. Victims, regardless of their gender, need support, protection, and access to resources.

By shedding light on this alarming trend, we can pave the way for a society that is more empathetic and responsive to the needs of all domestic violence victims.

Addressing the issue of male domestic violence victims requires a comprehensive approach.

It involves providing safe spaces for victims to share their experiences, access to counseling and legal support, and educational initiatives to dismantle the stereotypes that contribute to this problem.
