Niger State and NNPCL forge a groundbreaking Green Economy and Energy Development Partnership, unveiling four transformative projects, including hydroelectric power, solar parks, ethanol production, and massive reforestation, all contributing to a greener, sustainable future.

The picturesque landscapes of Niger State, Nigeria, are poised for a profound transformation as the Niger State Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have inked a historic agreement to champion the cause of a sustainable future through their Green Economy initiative.

his visionary endeavour has not only garnered international attention but also brought about the signing of a pioneering Green Economy and Energy Development Partnership agreement, paving the way for four exceptional projects set to redefine the state’s future.

The crown jewel of this agreement is the Greenfield Hydroelectric power project, a monumental leap towards a cleaner and greener energy landscape.

Niger State is set to harness the untapped potential of its water resources, propelling it towards a sustainable and electrifying future.

Institutions and homes across Niger State will bask in the brilliance of mega Solar parks, transforming them into beacons of sustainable energy.

With solar systems for 250,000 households out of the 800,000 in the state, the sun will soon be powering countless lives, reducing the carbon footprint one panel at a time.

A 500 million liters Ethanol Plant, a cornerstone of the agreement, is set to rise, drawing its life force from Maize, Sugarcane, and Sweet Sorghum cultivated on 100,000 hectares of land in Niger state.

This ambitious project will produce over 500,000 tons of crops, fuelling not just vehicles but also the state’s economic growth.

As part of its unwavering commitment to climate protection and carbon sequestration, NNPCL plans to plant a staggering 135 million trees on 100,000 hectares of land.

This monumental reforestation initiative not only supports the state’s vision but aligns with NNPCL’s 2030 net zero targets, setting a green benchmark for the future.

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State, a staunch advocate for environmental sustainability, has pledged to plant one billion trees on one million hectares of land over the next eight years.

This visionary plan has garnered the support and commitment of NNPCL, Africa’s largest oil and gas company.

In the pursuit of planting one billion trees, Niger state aspires to join hands with global giants, including oil and gas, shipping, airlines, cement companies, the United Nations, and its affiliated agencies.

This ambitious collaboration seeks to transform Niger State into a thriving green oasis.
