Troops of 1 Brigade Nigerian Army have arrested three suspected gun runners and rescued six kidnap victims in two separate operations across Zamfara State, dealing a major blow to terrorist logistics networks in the northwest.
Acting Commander Colonel J Umaru led the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in the successful operations along the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi and Anka–Gummi axes.
Gun Running Interception
At approximately 2:05pm on 23 August 2026, troops conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi Road apprehended three suspects: Lukman Sulaiman, 20; Nafiu Isa, 18—both from Yar-Galadima, Dan-Sadau District—and the driver, 60-year-old Adamu Lawali.
Concealed inside a bag of millet in a Golf Wagon (registration BMJ-143AA), operatives recovered one AK-103-2 rifle, a magazine, and 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
Preliminary investigations suggest the two younger suspects claimed an Alhaji in Gusau—whom they identified as their father—provided funds for the millet used to conceal the weapon. The firearm was allegedly destined for one Tijjani Goguwa of Yar-Galadima, Maru Local Government Area.
All suspects, along with the weapon, ammunition, and vehicle, have been taken into custody as efforts continue to apprehend the intended recipient.
Victim Rescue Operation
In a separate incident at approximately 2:30pm the same day, surveillance cameras at Forward Operating Base Anka detected an attack on a vehicle by suspected terrorists at Gadan Manya, along the Anka–Gummi Main Supply Route.
Troops mobilised immediately and engaged the assailants as they attempted to force the vehicle’s occupants into the bush. The swift response disrupted the operation, forcing the attackers to abandon all six victims and flee.
The rescued individuals were evacuated to General Hospital Anka, where three with minor injuries are receiving treatment and are in stable condition. Efforts are also underway to recover the abandoned vehicle.
Ongoing Security Commitment
These operations underscore the resolve of 1 Brigade troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to dismantle terrorist logistics, deny criminal elements freedom of action, and protect civilians along major routes and vulnerable communities.
The military has sustained robust patrols and surveillance across the region to maintain dominance and prevent terrorist resurgence.
