The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has formally launched his bid for the 2027 election, declaring that his candidacy is anchored on a singular conviction: Nigeria must work.

Speaking as campaigns officially commenced, the former Anambra State governor framed his ambition not as a personal pursuit but as a necessary response to the nation’s deepening crises.

“I consider myself among those contesting to address the challenges Nigeria currently faces. I enter this race with one firm belief: Nigeria must work,” Obi told supporters.

His campaign platform is expected to prioritise economic revival, national security, youth unemployment, educational reform, and improvements in the standard of living for ordinary Nigerians.

Obi, who commanded a formidable following among young voters during the 2023 election cycle under the Labour Party banner, is now seeking to broaden his political coalition ahead of the next contest.

The official start of the campaign season has intensified political activity across the country, with leading contenders expected to ramp up engagement with the electorate in the months ahead.

Obi’s running mate, former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, echoed the candidate’s message, urging Nigerians to seize the election as an opportunity to chart a new course for the country. He cited soaring living costs, widespread unemployment, pervasive insecurity, and economic volatility as urgent challenges demanding decisive action.

Ahead of the campaign season, Obi and other presidential aspirants signed the National Peace Accord, committing to peaceful, issue-based campaigns devoid of personal attacks and incendiary rhetoric.
