The decision follows the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who until his passing represented the constituency in the National Assembly.

In a press statement signed by Mohorret Bigun, Public Affairs Officer, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC confirmed that the election would be held in compliance with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

According to the released timetable, the Notice of Election will be published on Thursday, 20 August 2026. Political parties intending to field candidates are required to conduct their primaries between 21 and 25 August, with the final list of nominated candidates due for publication on 8 September.

Official campaigning will commence on 9 September and conclude on 17 September, in line with regulatory guidelines.

INEC urged all political parties to adhere strictly to the published schedule and to conduct their activities within the bounds of the law.

Reassuring stakeholders of its preparedness, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a level playing field and delivering a free, fair, and inclusive electoral process across the constituency’s 903 Polling Units, 31 Registration Areas, and three Local Government Areas.
