Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on football’s grandest stage, bringing an end to a remarkable international career.
The Portugal captain, 41, made the announcement during a press conference on Sunday, on the eve of his side’s pivotal Round of 16 showdown with Spain.
“Yes, it’s my last one. Let’s go and enjoy it,” Ronaldo told reporters.
His sister, Katia, had previously hinted at his international retirement, but the Al Nassr forward has now officially dispelled any doubt regarding his participation in the 2030 edition. By confirming his departure, Ronaldo ensures that global audiences are witnessing the final chapter of a career that has defined the modern era of football.
Already the record-holder for the most World Cup appearances, Ronaldo became the first player to feature in six tournaments – a testament to his remarkable longevity and sustained excellence at elite level. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, his trophy-laden tenure with both club and country has yielded numerous titles and broken countless records.
Portugal now turn their full attention to their knockout tie against Spain, as Ronaldo endeavours to bow out on the highest possible note by guiding his nation to a maiden World Cup triumph.
