KADUNA – The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has appealed to the state government for an operational vehicle to address the mobility challenges hindering its members’ field reporting, advocacy, and outreach activities.

This request was contained in a communique issued at the end of its monthly congress, held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, Muhammadu Buhari Way, Kaduna. The document was jointly signed by Jacqueline Adebejo, Chairperson of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, and Baraka Salisu, Secretary.

Beyond mobility, the congress urged the government to intensify efforts aimed at the growth and development of women, children, and the less privileged across the state.

Security and justice
While acknowledging the government’s intensified security operations, community policing, and intelligence gathering, NAWOJ stressed the need for sustained action. The congress commended the recent release of over 90 inmates, viewing it as a progressive step towards rehabilitation, reintegration, and the decongestion of correctional facilities.

Vocational training and infrastructure
The establishment of new vocational institutions was welcomed; however, the association called for vulnerable persons to be prioritised in admissions to ensure inclusiveness and equal opportunity. Additionally, while recognising the construction of the drainage control system in Rigasa as a timely intervention to mitigate flooding, congress urged the government to replicate similar projects in other flood-prone areas.

Historical awareness
Congress expressed concern over the misnaming of Yakowa Way. Commercial drivers reportedly refer to the road as ‘Sabon Hanya’, creating confusion among residents and commuters. The association emphasised that the road holds historical significance as it honours the late Governor Patrick Yakowa and urged authorities to reinforce its proper usage.

Peace and stability
Members lauded the restoration of peace and security in Birnin Gwari but urged that this achievement be sustained through continuous security presence, community dialogue, and economic empowerment.

Welfare activities
The congress also featured welfare programmes, including eye screening and the distribution of sanitary pads to members and their families.
