LAGOS – The Lagos State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to recognise and respect the role of opposition parties as critical stakeholders in sustaining democratic balance, accountability and progress.

In a statement on Monday, the council’s Publicity Secretary, James Adeshina, stressed the need for inclusive governance and broader political participation.

“A healthy democracy thrives on the recognition, inclusion and active participation of all political parties,” Mr Adeshina said. “It is imperative for the ruling party to dispel growing concerns and perceptions of a drift toward a one-party system.”

He explained that IPAC, as a statutory political advisory body, considered it necessary to offer guidance in the interest of democratic growth and good governance in Lagos State.

“Governance must remain people-oriented, inclusive and participatory. The government exists by the mandate of the people and must, therefore, govern in their best interest at all times,” he added.

According to Mr Adeshina, the IPAC leadership under its re-elected chairman, Mrs Temilola Akinade, would adopt a constructive approach to ensuring the government remains accountable.

He also urged the state government to demonstrate genuine commitment to its 2026 budget, tagged “Budget of Shared Prosperity”, through effective implementation. “Projects and policies arising from the budget should be people-centred and impactful, addressing both immediate and long-term needs,” he said.

Mr Adeshina further stressed sustained investment in human capital development, particularly among young people, to tackle unemployment and encourage innovation. He noted that strategic emphasis on education, skills development, entrepreneurship and capacity building would reduce unemployment while promoting social stability, innovation and moral growth.

“Strengthening youth engagement and empowerment remains a critical pathway to building a more secure, productive and value-driven Lagos State,” he said.

He reaffirmed IPAC’s commitment to constructive engagement and collaboration with relevant stakeholders toward a more inclusive and prosperous Lagos.
