Residents of the Abacha Road community in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have expressed their frustration with the state government, accusing officials of neglecting their needs, particularly regarding the deteriorating condition of Abacha Road. This vital thoroughfare, located in one of the most developed satellite towns outside the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), serves as a significant business hub for the state. The area was named after the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, who had plans for its development before his passing.

Despite the community’s growth and its attraction of various investments—including schools, hotels, and other hospitality ventures—residents contend that the lack of adequate road infrastructure hampers further development. The journey from the Abacha Road main junction to City College has become increasingly challenging, with the poor road conditions likened to a “journey through hell.” Many locals feel that their grievances have been ignored, with previous administrations, particularly that of former Governor Al-Makura, having made promises that went unfulfilled.

In response to the community’s concerns, Ali Abare, the Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, addressed accusations of governmental neglect. He stated that the perception of abandonment is influenced by the demographic composition of the area, which is predominantly Christian and home to many non-indigenes. However, Abare emphasized that Governor Abdullahi Sule, who has a background in education and experience in the United States, is committed to serving all constituents regardless of their religious affiliation.

“The entire Abacha Road area is of significant importance to the state, and the government has comprehensive plans for its development,” Abare asserted. He noted that the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board is currently being restructured, with a focus on Greater Karu’s development. He dismissed claims that the government’s inaction is due to the community’s religious demographics as unfounded and misleading.

As the discussions continue, residents remain hopeful for a timely response to their demands, urging the government to prioritize the improvement of Abacha Road to enhance the community’s growth and economic potential.
