A devastating stampede occurred on 18 December 2024 at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, resulting in the death of 35 minors. The event, which was part of a carnival organised on school premises, turned fatal, leaving families in grief and sparking outrage across Oyo State.

Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and promised a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the catastrophe.

He vowed to ensure those responsible are held accountable for the tragic loss of young lives.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of seven individuals implicated in the tragedy. Among them is Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, who has been identified as the primary sponsor of the ill-fated carnival.

The school principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, and five other suspects were also detained. The suspects, aged between 24 and 56, include:

Prophetess Naomi Silekunola (31 years old, main sponsor)

Fasasi Abdulahi (56 years old, school principal)

Genesis Christopher (24 years old)

Tanimowo Moruf (52 years old)

Anisolaja Olabode (42 years old)

Idowu Ibrahim (35 years old)

Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25 years old)

The police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed these arrests and assured the public that investigations are progressing under the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

In addition to the confirmed fatalities, six individuals sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The victims’ conditions remain serious, and healthcare workers are reportedly doing their best to save lives.

The police have heightened security measures across the state to prevent opportunistic crimes during this period of mourning. Residents have been advised not to panic as patrols and visible police presence increase in Ibadan and its environs.

Reports suggest that the carnival was held on school grounds, which may not have been adequately prepared for large crowds.

The incident has sparked outrage and grief among the public. Many are demanding that justice be served swiftly and that the authorities take steps to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Advocacy groups and concerned citizens are calling for stricter regulations on organising large public events, particularly those involving children.

Governor Makinde has reassured the public of the state government’s commitment to supporting affected families and implementing measures to avert similar disasters.
