The Crux of the Matter:

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Nasarawa State has adhered to a zoning arrangement that rotates the governorship seat among its three senatorial districts: Nasarawa West, Nasarawa South, and Nasarawa North. This tradition has aimed to foster inclusivity and political balance across the state.

1999–2007: Senator Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa West became the first democratically elected governor under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), serving two terms.

2007–2019: Nasarawa South dominated for 12 years through Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma (PDP) and Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura (Congress for Progressive Change, later APC).

2019–2027: Current Governor Abdullahi Sule, hailing from Nasarawa North, is set to complete his term by 2027.

As 2027 approaches, the spotlight has shifted back to Nasarawa West, widely considered next in line. However, opposing voices argue for alternative arrangements, including retaining the seat in Nasarawa North.

Several prominent figures have emerged as potential candidates, with varying political affiliations and strengths.

The former Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA), Dr Faisal Shuaibu is a rising political force.

His posters dominate Lafia’s streets, sparking both enthusiasm and criticism for their environmental impact.

The serving senator under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Wadada, is a formidable contender. His electoral success against the APC in 2023 positions him as a strong challenger.

His Political experience and track record of navigating opposition politics effectively.

The former Minister of Environment and close associate of influential figures like Abdullahi Adamu and Umaru Al-Makura.

His Strong political networks and a reputation for strategic leadership.

A grassroots politician and the immediate past Speaker of the Nasarawa State Assembly Ibrahim Baralabe.
His Recent political setbacks have raised questions about his viability as a contender.

Dr David Ombugadu from Nasarawa North, has proven to be a strong candidate. In the 2023 elections, he garnered 283,016 votes, narrowly losing to Governor Abdullahi Sule. Ombugadu remains a significant player and may pose a challenge in 2027 if the party supports his candidacy..
