Telecommunications giant, Globacom has thrown its weight behind international breakdance show, Battle of the Year.
Popularly known as BOTY, the “World Cup of Breakdance”, is the world’s biggest hip-hop dance show, which began in 1990. The regional qualifying tournaments are held worldwide with the world finals usually staged in Germany.
This year’s edition, which has Globacom’s backing, promises a whopping N84 million prize money and an opportunity to represent Nigeria at the global stage to winners at various stages of the competition.
Globacom’s Director of Communications, Andre Beyers, who gave details of the company’s collaboration with the global dance show at a press conference held at its head office in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday, disclosed that the show would offer unlimited opportunities for Nigerian youth to pursue their passion in dance.
“In line with our commitment to promoting the Nigerian entertainment industry and youth talent development across the country, we are excited to unleash the unlimited potential of Nigerian dancers and provide the platform for them to showcase their abilities on the world stage”, he said.
While encouraging interested dancers and dance crews to go towww.globotynigeria.com to enter for the competition, Mr. Beyers explained that participants are required to upload a 30-second entry video, after which the top 20 entries per region in each category will be selected.
Regional stages of the competition will hold across six states namely, Lagos, Kaduna, Benin, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Abuja, and would be beamed in a thirteen-series television show which will keep viewers glued to their screens and on the edge of their seats.
In addition to this, Beyers added that local and international dance legends such as Gidnasty (USA), Menno (Netherlands), Manuela (Germany), Nigeria’s Poco Lee, Pinky Debbie, Izzy Odigie, Big Flo, Maxbuck, Dunamis, Franc Okwara, JC Jedor, and Poxy (Cameroon), will feature as judges throughout the show.
Also speaking at the press conference, the CEO, House of Royalty, and Project Coordinator, Jolomi Kendaboh, disclosed that Glo Battle of the Year is the preliminary to the annual International Battle of the Year breakdance championship, adding, “We are confident that with the backing and full support of Globacom, we would take the standard of the dance competition to the next level”.
