Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter during Tuesday’s plenary.

The letter reads, “I am pleased to transmit to the Senate for consideration and passage into law the Legal Practitioners Bill, which repeals the Legal Practitioners Act, CAP L11, Laws of the Federation 2004, which was enacted into law in 1962.”

According to Mr Tinubu, the draft bill introduces a new framework that strengthens the regulation of the legal profession in Nigeria and provides necessary disciplinary measures, legal accountability, and stronger professional ethics.

He said the bill also introduced a more transparent regulatory structure for legal practitioners in Nigeria, all of which, he said, were critical in view of the growing domestic and international demands for legal services in the country.

“Specifically, provisions, including Section 1, provide the objectives of the proposed act, which include to protect and promote public interest, promote the rule of law, improve access to justice and increase public understanding of the legal rights and duties of citizens,” the president said.

Mr Akpabio, thereafter, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action and to report back in four weeks.
