Suspected terrorists on Monday bombed a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, in a move believed to be aimed at slowing ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The explosion, which reportedly occurred around 2am, destroyed a key link connecting Luma, Babana and Agwara communities—areas that have witnessed repeated attacks in recent times.
Residents said the incident disrupted economic activities, particularly the popular Babana border market held every Monday, as traders were unable to access the area due to the damaged bridge.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the attackers used an Improvised Explosive Device.
He said, “On March 23, 2026, at about 6:30am, a report was received indicating that earlier, at about 2:00am, suspected terrorists from the Kainji National Park forest used an explosive device to bomb a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma, Babana and Agwara communities.
“The bridge was damaged in what appears to be an attempt to undermine security operations in the area. Monitoring continues, while clearance operations have been intensified.”
Meanwhile, tragedy struck along the Nuku-Woro Road as a commercial vehicle carrying eight passengers reportedly ran over another explosive device.
Residents disclosed that all eight occupants died in the blast, which was suspected to have been planted by bandits operating in the area.
The police, however, had yet to confirm the incident as of the time of filing this report.
