The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University of Lafia Branch, has joined other branches across Nigerian universities to observe a three-day protest over the failure of the Federal Government to implement several agreements.
Recalled that agreement between the union and the government were reached in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties in October last year.
The Chairman of SSANU in FULafia, Comrade Monday Sarki, said that the protest was observed under the directive of the national body of the union to draw attention to the insensitivity of government in not honouring the agreements.
He said that the JAC of NASU and SSANU had on Tuesday 20, 2020, reached an agreement and signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government at the Honourable Minister’s Conference Room, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment only “for the government to refuse to implement.
The chairman expressed disappointment with the government’s failure to address any of the issues contained in the MoU.
Sarki listed some of the issues for which the MoU, was entered to include the Inconsistency of the IPPIS , non-payment of Earned Allowances (EA), non-payment of arrears of Minimum Wage, delay in the renegation of Federal Government/NASU and SSANU 2009 agreement and non-payment of retirement benefits of outgone members.
He also cited the usurpation of headship of non-teaching units by teaching staff in clear violation of Conditions of Service and establishment procedures, neglect and poor funding of state-owned universities
and non constitution of visitation panels for universities owned by the Federal Government.
These developments, the protesting union said, have brewed tension and dissatisfaction among SSANU members, as such the union therefore, called on the Federal Government to immediately address all the issues it raised.
It would be recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have through a circular directed to all branches in the universities and inter-university centres, to commence a three-day protest from today.
The JAC observed with disappointment that the Federal Government has completely failed to address any of the issues contained in the MoU.
In view of this, JAC directed all the branches to hold a mandatory meeting on Monday (yesterday), to sensitise members on the issues contained in the MoU, and that, “a three-day protest should hold from Tuesday to Thursday at each branch from 08:am to 04:pm each day.”
The circular, signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Comrade Peters Adeyemi and the SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, also directed branches to ensure that all members of the unions fully participate in the protests while all COVID-19 protocols are to be complied with.
