South East: HURIWA Calls For Classification Of Miyetti Allah As An Terrorist Group

Vexed that South East political leaders have failed to get the President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government to take honest, science and evidence-based steps to unravel the true identities of the unknown gunmen’ in the South East of Nigeria wreaking havoc, a call has gone to the President to classify Miyetti Allah Cattle Seller Association as a terrorist group.

To the HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association and the other faction of Miyetti Allah are suspects behind the spate of attacks targeting government institutions like the High Court in Ebonyi state, and security forces in the South East because of their past threats to send armed Fulani vigilantes to the South East region. “It’s possible they are doing these to compel the South East Governors to endorse the plan to have their armed vigilantes in the South East of Nigeria to protect herdsmen.”

Making the call in media statement by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and Miss Zainab Yusuf of the HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) condemns absolutely the hypocrisy of President Muhammadu Buhari in overlooking the series of open threats by the Miyetti Allah to send armed vigilantes to the South East.

The Rights group has also carpeted the governors of the South East for failing to defy President Buhari and embark on far reaching dialogues with all groups and stakeholders including persons with influence to convince the indigenous peoples of Biafra (IBOB) to join forces with the political leaders to unmask the identities of the unknown gunmen whose objective is to destabilize South East of Nigeria and turn it into a theatre of terror.

“Generations unborn will remember the current set of cowardly and corrupt governors of the South East of Nigeria for failing to take steps within the law to stand for their people and their land and to work to stop these externally coordinated and well funded targeted attacks on the South East of Nigeria”, HURIWA said.
HURIWA affirmed thus: “We are convinced that President Buhari is very insincere to resolve the security challenges in the South East which we suggest may be masterminded and sponsored by officials of Miyetti Allah Cattle Sellers Association who had as far  back as last two years disclosed that it will send armed vigilantes to the South East but as it is with President Buhari’s government which treats Miyetti Allah and armed Fulani herdsmen as sacred cows, these threats are clinically being overlooked whilst the South East of Nigeria is being turned into arena of chaos, violence, gun attacks and massive slaughter of the security operative. All people of goodwill must speak up now to denounce the dishonesty of President Muhammadu Buhari who is ensconced in the heavily air conditioned office in AsoRock and watches as the South East of Nigeria and much of Nigeria slide into the precipice of anarchy,  doom and gloom”.
The Right group said it was public knowledge that as far back as June 20th 2019, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, called for establishment of Fulani Youth Vigilante body in communities of the south east, to compliment its host community counterparts and other constituted security apparatus in the zone.
The cattle breeders, it would be recalled made the request just as the South east Governors told them that nobody in the zone was against rearing of cattle but that it was paramount for everyone to understand that there are rules of engagement in every relationship, including that of herders and farmers. Almost the entire people of the South East of Nigeria kicked against this plot by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to import their armed mercenaries into the South East of Nigeria.
HURIWA recalled again that on april 5th 2021, there was a threat by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to deploy 5,000 of its vigilante to the South East to protect herders in the zone, but the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned the association to steer clear from Igbo land, just as it has threatened to deploy its own outfit, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to the North.

HURIWA said there is a very convincing reason to believe that Miyetti Allah may have made good their threats to send armed marauders and mercenaries into the South East of Nigeria and these atrocities committed by the unknown gunmen may actually be the handiwork of these so called armed Fulani  mercenaries imported into the South East of Nigeria based on this well documented material information.

The Rights group  has also accused the leadership of the military of dereliction of duty and for deliberately allowing the unknown gunmen to continue to carry out their dastardly crimes most likely because their Commander-in-chief the President has yet to give them unambiguous instructions to eradicate the menace of the unknown gunmen because of the likely involvement of MIYETTI ALLAH CATTLE BREEDERS ASSOCIATION.

The Rights group said the Nigerian Army had pledged to protect all orientation camps and corps lodges of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the South-East amidst current insecurity in the zone but said nothing on why they have failed to protect vital national institutions that are being attacked by these unknown gunmen.
“HURIWA recalled with shock that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the 82 Division of the Nigeria Army in Enugu State, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, gave the assurance in Enugu on Monday when the Director of the South East Area Office of NYSC, Mrs. Ngozi Nwatarali, visited him. But has not made similar commitments to eradicate the threats of unknown gun-men from the larger society of the South East of Nigeria just as the Rights group suspected that it is likely that the President has yet to give the Nigerian army a clear directive to wipe out the real persons masquerading as unknown in the South East of Nigeria. General Lagbaja requested that NYSC State Coordinators in the South-East should update and compile addresses of all Corps lodges in the region and liaise with the various Brigade Commanders for effective security strategy. The GOC observed that the security challenge in the South East was still at the lowest spectrum of insurgency. He further noted that criminal elements were attacking national assets at the moment and that the condition might degenerate to kidnapping if not nipped in the bud. If all these are not signals that some forces in Abuja plotted the destabilisation of South East of Nigeria then what else is?”.
