The Senate has commenced the process that will lead to the establishment of an agency for the rehabilitation, de-radicalization and integration of repentant insurgents in Nigeria.
This followed a bill sponsored by the former governor of Yobe state, Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe East) which has just been read for the first time at the floor of the red chamber.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian military has a rehabilitation centre for repentant Boko Haram terrorists in Gombe State.
Elanza News reports that the centre has trained and rehabilitated over 100 insurgents since it inception over three years ago.
It was gathered that the repentant insurgents are trained in various traits like tailoring, mechanic and other skills.
But the bill sponsored by Senator Geidam seems to be seeking for legal backing for the military rehabilitation centre in Gombe State that will also lead to accommodation of many professional personnels.
The bill, “National Agency for the Education, Rehabilitation, De-radicalization and Integration of Repentant Insurgents in Nigeria (Eat, etc) Bill, 2020 (SB. S40), has passed first reading.
