The deputy chief whip and Senator representing Niger North Senatorial District, Sahabi Abdullahi, is set to battle his home state governor for the seat.
This comes just as constituents have purchased N20 million nomination and expression of interest forms for the Senator.
Even though reports say the governor is also battling the Senator for the Niger North Senate seat, Sahabi said will never take his constituents for granted, having asked him to run for a third term.
According to the Senator, when the constituents asked him to contest for the senatorial seat in 2015, he consolidated their action with good performance that earned him a reelection.
Elanza News reports that 87 wards in eight local governments that made up Niger North purchased the nomination and expression of interest forms for Sahabi insisting he must contest the 2023 senatorial election so that he can return to the 10 Assembly.
Sahabi who thanked God and the constituents for their efforts, prayed to God to give him victory in the contest.
“Victory is from God,” Sahabi said of the 2023 senatorial race in which he is facing stiff opposition from the Niger State Governor, Sani Bello.
“The 2023 senatorial contest is to consolidate what I have been building over the years. In 2015 when I contested following calls from our people, it seemed like a jock and God give us victory. In 2019, my performance gave me victory again.
“From 2015 till date, I have served you very well. As you all know, it is people first, people always. The signing of the bill for the establishment of Federal University Kontagora by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021 is what should be commended.
“Our children, and children unborn will benefit from the University and our peoples businesses and other socio economic activities will expand,” Sahabi said.
The Senate deputy chief whip said being in the National Assembly for eight years helped him to touch all the local governments in Niger North which he documented in a scorecard.
“I have not taken you for granted, I will not take you for granted. I live among you and will not do anything that will hurt you even as I contest the next election, I count on your support and may God give us victory,” Sahabi told constituents who converged on the National Assembly insisting he must contest the election.
The Director General of the Sahabi campaign council, Hon Garba Mohammed Danladi, said even though it is time for change in leadership, added that the people in Niger North are insisting that Sahabi should come back to the 10 Assembly.
“We all know that Abdullahi is an icon to be reckoned with here in this house. He was spokesman of the Senate but back home, he was the messiah of the common man.
He won a second term in the 9th assembly and emerged as the deputy chief whip. In the 10 Assembly, we are expecting nothing less. This meeting involved people in the eight local government areas that made up Niger North.
“The people of Niger North have proven to be people who are appreciative and they believed it is a payback time that is why they are here to say thank you for the work you have done in the eight and ninth assembly. They purchased the form so that you can be at the 10 Assembly,” Danladi said, adding that the constituents have prepared themselves, do their homework and are here with a package that will enhance your contest.
