Robbers Target Bank Customers, Robb 2 Journalists In Nasarawa

Armed robbers who are good in snatching people’s money are on the prowl in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, robbing bank customer’s on a daily basis.

Some victims of the syndicate, among them two journalists in the state, who narrated their experiences to our correspondent said they were robbed of their money at various gunpoints.

Two of the victims are the state secretary of NUJ, Mr Sunday John and the editor in chief of a community newspaper, Eggon News, Mr Mathew Kuju.

The NUJ state secretary lost N250,000, while the editor in chief of Eggon News, lost N800,000= in a week interval to the robbers.

Investigation shows that NUJ secretary was trailed from Access bank along Jos road and robbed at the NUJ press centre, while the Eggon News editor, was trailed from the same bank and robbed in his office in Bukan Sidi.

Similarly, a week ago, a business man who withdrew the sum of 7.5 million naira from First bank Lafia branch, was robbed near Access bank on Doma road, inside Lafia town.

An eyewitness who saw how it all happened, said “the syndicate drove passed their victim like James Bond, blocked him and pointed gun at him, collected the money and zoomed off”

On his part Mr Kuju, who disclosed that he withdrew the huge amount to transact a business, said “I packed the car and went into the office to pick something, as I was coming out I saw somebody with the money bag, ran and entered a waiting vehicle on the other side of the express road”

NUJ secretary while narrating what happened said after withdrawal from the bank he drove to NUJ press centre and packed, then rushed in for a meeting.

“After the meeting, as I walked towards my car to pick the N250,000= and give it to my chairman, I discovered my side glass was broken; low and behold, they took the money away” he said.

Police PPRO in the state, Ranham Nansel, who confirmed two of the incidents said the Commissioner of Police, has directed his deputy in charge of operations to convene a meeting next week with bank managers to find a lasting solution to the menace.

He assured that they are on the trail of the syndicate and by the time they get one of them, they can get all of them.
