Take a second look at this picture. It is that of an 84-year-old retired soldier, Waje Laah Mabuhu, who at this age is being detained at a Kaduna State Police Station because cows die near his communiy.
Mabuhu did not get to the Police through house arrest. Himself, four village heads, their Secretaries and Seven others from Atyap Chiefdom of Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State were invited for a peace meeting by Operation Safe Heaven (OSH) a military detachment handling security in Southern Kaduna and Plateau State.
They were kept for days by soldiers who insisted the communiy leaders must tell them the person that killed the cows.
The elders insisted they are not aware of the person that killed the cows. They were taken from Kafanchan to Kaduna town.
They are undergoing interrogation at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Kaduna.
Their lawyer’s efforts to secure bail have proved abortive despite weeks of inhuman treatment and detention.
Not even calls by the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) and the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) for their release or be charge to court have receive attention from authorities.
Elanza News gathered that on 31st of March this year, all the 15 people were invited for a meeting by the military in Kafanchan only to be detained for four days before being transferred to the Police Area Command in Kafanchan.
On Friday 9th of April they were taken to the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Kaduna for further interrogation.
When journalists visited Kabala Costain Police Station where the arrested persons are being in custody they complained of being kept under inhuman conditions for a crime they know nothing about.
According to them they are expected to produce persons who allegedly killed some Cows in their communities, an allegation they say they know nothing about.
The detained traditional leaders are: Village Head of Angwar Wakili Mallam Ishaya Achi, Village Head of Makutsatin Mallam Ayuba Dodo, Village Head of Mabuhu Mallam Nuhu Bobai, Village Head of Wawa Rafi Joseph bobai among others.
Both the Police and the Military is yet to speak on the matter.
