The Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), has ramped up its operational tempo, executing a series of intelligence-led missions that have led to notable successes against criminal elements in Benue and Nasarawa States.

In a robust display of military efficiency, troops have intensified aggressive patrols, effectively neutralising threats posed by armed bandits. Recent operations have culminated in the arrest of criminal suspects and the recovery of weapons, underscoring the commitment to restoring peace in the region.

### Recent Operations

On **3 February 2026**, troops from Sector 1, OPWS, acted swiftly on credible intelligence about armed herders operating in Ayamba Village, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. Collaborating with the Nigerian Police Force and the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, they mobilised to the site.

Upon arrival, the troops engaged with the armed elements, resulting in the neutralisation of one bandit. The operation yielded significant results, with the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, three rounds of 7.62mm x 39 special ammunition, and two magazines.

The following day, 4 February 2026, troops from Sector 2, stationed at Patrol Base Agyaragu in Nasarawa State, acted on actionable intelligence provided by a local hunter regarding suspected armed robbers on the Asupe–Ome Road in Obi Local Government Area.

Swiftly responding, the troops collaborated with the hunter and apprehended one suspect, Adam Paul, aged 34, alongside the recovery of another AK-47 rifle. Preliminary questioning revealed that the weapon had been sourced from a local resident, Tela Obu, in Duduguru Community. Two accomplices, John Amos and Elisha, managed to flee and are currently at large; pursuit efforts are ongoing.

Addressing Cattle Rustling

On the same day, troops from the COAS Intervention Battalion IX, stationed at Agbaragba in Benue State, responded to a distress call concerning the mobilisation of youths from Agagbe community, suspected of rustling cattle. Upon reaching the area, the troops discovered several deceased cattle scattered throughout, leading to the arrest of three suspects, who were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force in Naka for further investigation and prosecution.

In another operation on 5 February 2026, troops stationed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Agbagbe received intelligence indicating that youths were butchering rustled cattle meat within a residential building in Agagbe Community. Two suspects were apprehended on site, found in possession of mutilated and butchered meat believed to be sourced from rustled cattle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that these suspects were allegedly involved in ongoing cattle rustling activities, a crime that threatens livelihoods and disrupts peace in rural communities. The apprehended individuals have been taken into custody for investigation and potential prosecution in accordance with extant laws.

Commanding Success

Major General Moses Gara, the Force Commander of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, praised the troops for their resilience, vigilance, and aggressive stance in curbing criminal activities. He emphasised that these successes are in line with directives from the military high command, advocating for an escalation of aggressive patrols and a focus on intelligence-driven operations.

General Gara urged the troops to maintain their momentum and combat readiness to deter and neutralise criminal elements within the Joint Operations Area. He expressed gratitude to local communities and other security agencies for their ongoing support, which has been crucial to the achievements of Operation WHIRL STROKE.

Community Cooperation and Future Strategies

The cooperation between the military and local communities is a critical component of the operation’s success. The information provided by residents has enabled law enforcement to respond swiftly to emerging threats, ultimately contributing to the safety and security of the region.

The military’s focus on intelligence-driven strategies and community engagement is likely to continue as it seeks to dismantle networks of armed banditry and restore order. The commitment to aggressive patrols and operations will remain central to OPWS’s mission.

Conclusion

As Operation WHIRL STROKE continues to assert its presence in Benue and Nasarawa States, the recent series of successful operations serves as a testament to the power of coordinated efforts between the military, police, and local communities. The ongoing fight against banditry and criminality is a priority for the Joint Task Force, and with the support of the public, the path to a safer environment is increasingly within reach.

This renewed focus on intelligence gathering and community collaboration is expected to yield further results, ensuring that criminal activities are met with swift and decisive action. The people of Benue and Nasarawa States can remain hopeful as Operation WHIRL STROKE intensifies its efforts in the battle against armed banditry.
