A frontline statesman and former Minister of Information and Culture of the federal republic, Onwa Ikeobasi Mokelu, has joined the race for the governorship of Anambra State.
Onwa Mokelu picked the Expression of Interest Form and the Nomination Form of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in Abuja on Friday, May 21, 2021, creating a buzz in political and social circles in the state and beyond.
A delegate to the National Constitutional Conference of 1994/95, Onwa Mokelu is a scion of the Mokelu political dynasty and is reputed for his integrity and high level of political and social thought.
He strongly advocates and practises honor, character and prudence in governance, as well as promoting accountability, equity and selflessnes in all spheres of life.
Onwa Mokelu left a legacy during his tenure as Minister of Information and Culture and Member of the Federal Executive Council of the Federation from 1997 to 1998. He was also appointed into the National Council of Nigerian Vision [NCNV] which was then the nation’s economic planning council.
His political activities include his membership of and participation as a Delegate in the National Constitutional Conference from 1994 to 1995. He made far-reaching contributions which led to some decisions that were adopted as resolutions of the Conference, including but not limited to proposing and adopting the creation of Ekwusigo Local Government Council Area in Anambra State.
He is also the chairman of the Forum of Former Ministers of the Government of the Federation.
Onwa Mokelu is the Founder, Leader and Convener of the #iStandwithbuhari movement, a support group he formed in 2018, spread across the 774 local government areas in the country and which canvassed and mobilized votes across the country for his friend, President Muhammadu Buhari, in the 2019 presidential elections.
Onwa Mokelu is a highly respected political leader, and analysts are largely of the opinion that his entry has raised the bar, and that substance and quality have been brought in.
