Only Justice CAN Help Democracy Thrive, CAN President Says

Published

on

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Archbishop Daniel Okoh yesterday said only Justice can help democracy to thrive.

According to the CAN President, democracy has become a nightmare in Nigeria because of lack of justice and warned against what he described as persistent ethnic profiling.

Okoh stated this at a Church and Mission Leaders’ Summit in Abuja, organised by Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, Okoh said over 250 ethnic nationalities are plagued by religious, ethnic, communal and resource conflict, adding that even the “benefits from oil wealth could not touch the lives of the people equitably.

“Allegiances to ethnic groups come first before the Nigeria state. The rise of separatist groups, bandits and the Boko Haram extremists threatens our corporate existence and growth as an indivisible entity.Unfortunately, in our time, democracy that proves to be the best form of government anywhere in the world is fast turning to a nightmare for us.

“The February and March 2023 polls were characterized by manifest irregularities and a lot of ordinary people are fast losing hope in the democratic system of government in Nigeria. This in itself is a major conflict that will require peacebuilding efforts to persuade the different political parties that participated in that election to embrace peace for the good of the nation.

“If this is not done, it may take a long time to restore the confidence of the majority of Nigerians to keep faith in government institutions again, particularly, the electoral body,” Okoh said, adding that efforts by local and international peace bodies have culminated in the fragile peace Nigeria has today.

“Peace building is actually an endless project as issues likely to trigger conflict continue to confront the nation on a daily basis. Ability to douse these tensions and persuade the aggrieved parties to seek a peaceful solution to their contention is the hallmark of peacebuilding efforts.”

“Violent conflicts among diverse communities have become endemic and too prolonged with a good number of people killed, properties worth billions of Naira have been destroyed and millions of people displaced from their ancestral lands.

“This has created communities known as “Internally Displaced Persons” (IDPs) who now live in deplorable conditions in Internally Displaced Camps in many parts of Nigeria. Those who are not yet displaced live in fear, suspicion and uncertainties. The overall effect is hunger, poverty, political instability and increased debt burden leading to an unprecedented social dislocation.”

He however said he is glad that Rev & Prof. (Mrs.) Gideon Para-Mallam have dedicated their lives to this onerous task of peacebuilding and they have made tremendous impact in our nation particularly in the North, through these efforts.

As a way forward, he proffered that there must be a commitment to transparency in elections that bring people to political leadership positions in order to ensure full participation in the election and eliminate voter apathy.

He said Nigeria is delicately polarized along ethnic and religious lines and must tread cautiously and always make concerted efforts to build, nurture and sustain peace.

“Peace will not come if we do not leave our comfort zones to engage people of other religions and ethnic groups. In this, we have no other choice. It is not too late for the Nigerian state to deliberately seek genuine reconciliation and resolution of the contentious religious and ethnic crises militating against our progress and development.” He said.

The Convener, Dr Gideon Para-Mallam, said sustainable peace in Nigeria is never to be taken for granted adding that global peace continues to be threatened.

“Persecution and violence against the Church have become an easy trigger for attacks in Christians communities all over Nigeria,” he added.

Senate President Asked Me For ‘Special Moments’ – Natasha Akpoti

Published

on

The senator, who represents Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio made an inappropriate request for her to spend “special moments” at his residence.

Natasha Akpoti, made the claim during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Friday.

Her comments follow a recent confrontation with Akpabio over a seating arrangement dispute in the Senate, which led to her being referred to the chamber’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

The controversy began last week when Akpoti-Uduaghan challenged the Senate President over the relocation of her seat in the chamber.

The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, prompting Akpabio to call on Senate security to remove her. Intervention from fellow lawmakers prevented the situation from deteriorating further.

Speaking on Arise TV, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed her dispute with Akpabio dates back to December 2023 when she and her husband visited Akwa Ibom to celebrate the Senate President’s birthday.

She recounted: “Akpabio was showing me around his house and was holding my hands, with my husband following behind us, when he said he wants me to come and be spending special moments in his house.”

She further revealed that her husband overheard the remark and later advised her not to travel abroad alone or be in the company of the Senate President unaccompanied.

In response to the seating dispute, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behaviour, stating that the Senate is “not for entertainment.”

Tariff increase will guarantee quality telecom services – Minister

Published

on

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has said the 50 per cent tariff increase for telecom companies will guarantee meaningful access to telecoms services for Nigerians.

The minister said this while briefing State House Correspondents on Thursday.

The minister had led Mr Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Airtel and other members of the executive of the company, to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tijani said the decision to increase telecoms tariff was difficult.

He, however, said that it was the responsibility of the government to look out for the interest of citizens, individuals and businesses.

“We have to ensure that when they invest, we can keep them afloat.

” This is a sector that employs close to half a million people in this country, including the value chain.

“Also, it was quite a difficult decision, balancing the need to allow these businesses to be sustainable, to stay afloat, but at the same time ensuring that each and every citizen can have access to telecommunication services,” said Tijani.

He stated that the Federal Government engaged KPMG to conduct a study to determine the optimal tariff allowance which led to the 50 per cent increase.

“If we chose not to allow the increase in tariff, we also were at risk of losing jobs, and some of the companies packing up.

“When you weigh that, it’s also not the best thing for the economy.

” The priority for this government is actually meaningful access.

“We don’t want our people to just have access to telecommunication services.

” We want it to be meaningful; the quality that you get is extremely important,” the minister said.

He said the Federal Government had invested in 90,000 kilometres of fiber to ensure the entire country was covered.

The minister added that the Federal Executive Council had also approved investment in additional 7,000 telecoms towers in rural areas.

He said quality access and connectivity required significant investment.

The minister added that the Federal Government must encourage the private sector to continue to make such investment.

Mittal, on his part, said Nigeria was the soul of Barthi Airtel’s operations in Africa, with the potential to match India’s advancements in digital innovation, connectivity and financial inclusion.

He said Airtel’s success in Nigeria was crucial to its overall success in Africa.

Mittal said Nigeria’s strategic importance underscored Airtel’s objective of driving growth and transformation across the African continent.

“Nigeria is the most important part of our Africa strategy.

” In fact, the entire Africa rests on the back of Nigeria for Airtel,” he said. (NAN)
