Northern Group under the auspices of Arewa Progressive youth Movement for Good Governance has petitioned the Kaduna State House of Assembly over Environmental Pollution, smuggling, imposition of alcohol on minors and non- alcoholic communities by the Nigerian Breweries Plc.
The group called on the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly Ibrahim Yusuf Zailani to speedily summon the company for interrogation.
Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna, the Coordinator of the group Comrade Ibrahim Ahmadu lamented that” ‘’the issue of environmental pollution is as old as the company itself adding that reports indicated that Nigerian Breweries has polluted the Kakuri area for almost 40 years.
“It will shock you to know that after all these years nothing has been done. The company has always maintained that the area is an industrial area but before the government even carved out that lane as an industrial area people were there. I challenge all of you media men to go to the back of the company around Kakuri area from the Kaduna South local government Secretariat to the bus stop and towards back of Sarki’s palace you will see what we are talking about,” the group said.
‘’For over two weeks now after Nigerian Custom Service paraded a truck of Nigerian Breweries used for smuggling foreign rice from neighbouring countries into Nigeria if the Nigerian Custom Service had done that in error or let’s say media misquoted or misinterpreted, the Breweries could have responded but have you media people see their response? Capital no, meaning that they are guilty and can’t dare deny because there is overwhelming evidence of smuggling against them, ‘’ Ahmadu stressed.
Speaking on traffic offences, Ahmadu: ‘’go to Kaduna State Transport Law Enforcement Agency (KASTLEA) today and ask the zonal heads of Zones 1, 3, 5 and 10 that are in the metropolis to show you records of booking of offences from big truck. Nigerian Breweries trucks are the highest, sometimes they will insist that they don’t have truck but transporters under them. The question is who are these transporters serving or working for? The answer is Nigerian Breweries Plc. These drivers spoil our roads and cause traffic jam from Sabon Tasha to Kakuri, to Nasarawa area and Station Market and many other places.
“We call on KASTLEA to be more vigilant and continue to enforce the state laws on transport. We call on all well meaning Nigerians to educate their children on alcohol consumption especially for minors as it is inimical to their health and morals. This is one way the company have also erred and we won’t be quiet about it,” Ahmadu added.
