The Nigerian Medical Association Benue State branch has raised alarm over the alleged ill treatment melted on Doctors and other health workers who are called at night to attend to emergency situations by Security Agents in the State.
This is even the Association through its Public Relations Officer Dr Solomon Dooga also called on the Federal and State Government to rise up and end the brutality and malhandling of Doctors, Health workers and other Citizens in the State by Security Personnels, especially the Nigerian Army.
Dr. Dooga informed that the association is painfully sad and disturbed over the continuous brutality and malhandling of doctors and other health workers who are called at night to attend to emergency situations,by security agents, especially the Nigerian Military in the State.
According to him “On the 13th of May, 2021, the men of Nigerian Army brutally beat up a doctor who is a Senior Registrar with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Màkurdi while he was on his way to his official Call Duty.
He said, “Despite introducing himself with his Identity Card, the Soldiers collected the Card, broke it, and asked him to lie down on the road, with guns pointing at him, also threatening to shoot him. He was mercilessly beaten with bruises all over his body’
“He was later admitted at BSUTH the Doctor who was on a mission to save life is now psychologically traumatized and dehumanized and this is happening right in the heart of Makurdi Metropolis by men of the Nigerian Army who have claim they are sent into the State to protect citizens and their Properties”
“This disheartening event is now a recurring decimal, and recently getting worse, despite several advocacy visits by the NMA Benue State to the Security Agencies to cement a harmonious inter-professional relationship”
“Even though the NMA as the umbrella body of Nigerian Doctors appreciates the wonderful, gallant men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces working tirelessly at the height of insecurity in the country, to protect the citizens from internal and external aggressors who continuously threaten our common existence, we are not happy for this gesture and we are saying enough is enough, the concerned authorities should called this personnels to order”
“We are also calling on the Nigerian Army and other security apparatus in Benue State to respect the sanctity of life and the Fundamental Rights of all Health Workers and other law-abiding citizens especially those on essential duties in carrying out their official duties, except if they are in the State on a different mission”
While calling on the Government to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous act be fished out and brought to book. the Association equally demanded a public apology from the Nigeria Army for brutalizing its member.
“We commend all Medical Doctors in the state for the show of maturity and continuously being law abiding in the face of this affront, urging the relevant authorities to provide security and ensure free flow of movements for doctors as well as ambulance and other Healthcare workers”
“The Association further applauded the Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, Chief Medical Director Prof. Terrumun Swende and the entire Management of BSUTH, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Joseph Ngbea for being proactive and matured way of handling this matter to avert the escalation.
