Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed that despite Nigeria’s rich diversity and complexity, effective governance is within reach if leaders are truthful and committed.

Speaking on Tuesday during the launch of the Bakhita ICT Centre at the Catholic Secretariat in Sokoto State, Obasanjo highlighted that Nigeria’s true strength lies in its ability to unite amidst its differences.

“There are many positive aspects of Nigeria,” he noted. “Our unity in diversity is a testament to our resilience, and the nation’s current state is a direct result of this diversity.”

He further emphasized, “When diversity is coupled with good governance and inclusivity, Nigeria will earn the respect it deserves and stand among the world’s leading nations.”

Obasanjo underscored that the integrity of leaders is vital for effective governance. “Nigeria is not a difficult country to govern if leaders are honest with themselves, their God, and the populace.”

Reflecting on his experiences, he stated, “I have greatly benefited from Nigeria’s diversity. Since 1979, I have sought wisdom and guidance from elders across the country to help navigate our unity in diversity.”

He also stressed the significance of education and knowledge in fostering national development, stating, “In today’s world, it is essential to equip ourselves not just with general knowledge but also with practical skills that empower individuals, families, communities, and the nation as a whole.”

Obasanjo cautioned about the potential challenges Nigeria might encounter by 2050, when the population is expected to reach 400 million. “If we do not prepare for these challenges, what we face today will seem trivial in comparison,” he warned.

He pointed out the alarming statistic that 24 million children are currently out of school, which could serve as a breeding ground for future insurgency. “We must remain committed to educating every Nigerian child. An educated populace will lead to better governance, improved leadership, and a stronger society,” he cautioned.

In his address, Obasanjo commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his leadership in Sokoto State and praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, for promoting unity. He also recognized Bishop Matthew Kukah for establishing the ICT centre and acknowledged Aare Afe Babalola for his support of the initiative.

Sultan Abubakar thanked Obasanjo for attending the event and encouraged Nigerians to emulate his commitment to fostering unity. He stressed the urgent need for collective action to address security issues and drive development in the country.

Aminu Dikko, representing Governor Aliyu, expressed gratitude to Obasanjo and the Catholic Diocese for the initiative.

The ICT Centre will offer courses in computer literacy, office productivity, coding, computer engineering, software development, data science, and digital analysis, among others.
