New Electricity Tariff: Workers May Lose Jobs In Kano

By Musa Sunusi Ahmad

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) says the recent hike in electricity tariff my lead to job loss.

The Chairman of the association, Bompai branch Sani Hussaini Sani said this on Tuesday.

Mr Sani the hike is coming at a time when the purchasing power of the people has been greatly affected by inflation and the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that the tariff hike means they will have to pass on the extra cost to consumers.

“If the price of what we are producing gets hiked and there is no patronage, we will have to lay off some staff.

“We can’t keep producing what we are not selling.

“What this means is that if we are not selling, we may have to cut the hours of production.

“If we are not utilizing our already existing staff strength, we would no longer need them.” Mr Sani said.

It could be recalled that the federal government announced a hike in electricity tariff on September 1, 2020.
