In the month of January and February, 2020, no fewer than three persons have died in about 43 fire incidences recorded in Nasarawa State, officials say. 
The chief Fire Officer of the Nigeria Fire Service in Nasarawa State, Dalhatu Dogara, who disclosed this in Lafia, attributed the recent fire outbreaks to the negligence of residents who don’t switch off their electrical appliances when they are not in use.
According to Dogara, about 70 percent of the fire incidents was as a result of carelessness on the part of residents in the state.
He said, “Most of the outbreaks recorded were due to electrical fault owing to the negligence from some residents that allow electrical appliances plugged in even when they were not home.”
Dogara who expressed worry over the increase in fire infernos in the state, said “43 incidences have been recorded with three cases in Nasarawa Eggon, two deaths in Doma local government area and one death in Lafia local government area of the state.
“the matter has become a source of concern to the state government”, he added.
According to him, the illicit activities of gas peddlers has escalated the problem, noting that many gas sellers in the state were illegal while many gas stations have not meet the requirement for citing a gas station stipulated by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).
He, however, urged the state government to ensure all local government areas are  equip with fire fighting facilities.
He appealled to the citizen of the state to ensure they have fire extinguisher in their homes in case of an outbreak.
The fire service chief said the fire extinguisher will help before the arrival of fire fighters if an incident occur.
The Executive Secretary, Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Zakari Zamani Alumaga, called on the residents to always have enough ventilation in their various houses while cooking with gas.
He advised that gas cylinders should be kept outside the kitching, calling on all stakeholders to join hands in checkmating activities of illegal gas stations.
He said SEMA will embark on massive sensitization in markets and schools on fire safety tips.
