On 7th October 2025, a targeted and intelligence-led operation by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) successfully dismantled clusters of illegal crude oil refining activities within the creeks of the Etche local government area in Rivers State.

According to a statement from NAF Spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the airstrikes were executed by the Air Component as part of the ongoing campaign against oil theft.

During the mission, NAF aircraft identified active illegal refining sites hidden within a densely forested region near Owaza.

The location, which was entirely secluded and devoid of visible human presence, was confirmed through reliable intelligence and aerial reconnaissance.

“The aircrew engaged the targets with precision, neutralising the sites and halting the illegal operations underway,” he stated.

Following the operation, the NAF responded to claims from a group alleging that the airstrikes impacted a local gin distillery in Umuebele; however, no casualties have been reported.

“In accordance with its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP), the NAF has initiated the necessary steps to verify this situation.

“The Service reiterates its commitment to international best practices and remains steadfast in its duty to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians, while ensuring transparency and accountability in its operations,” he concluded.
