Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, cutting the gap to leaders Arsenal to just six points with a game in hand.
Pep Guardiola’s side produced a devastating second-half blitz, scoring three goals after the interval to take full advantage of Arsenal’s shock 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth a day earlier.
Nico O’Reilly broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, heading home from close range after a pinpoint cross. Six minutes later, a sublime pass from Kevin De Bruyne found John Stones, who finished emphatically from 12 yards. Jeremy Doku then capitalised on a defensive error to drill in the third in the 68th minute, sealing a statement victory.
The result sets up a seismic showdown against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on 19 April. Should City win that fixture, they would move within three points of Mikel Arteta’s spluttering side, who have squandered substantial leads in the 2023 and 2024 title races.
Arteta described his team’s defeat to Bournemouth as a “punch in the face”, and City’s west London triumph delivered another body blow to the Spaniard.
Guardiola’s men are hitting form at a critical juncture, having already beaten Arsenal in the League Cup final and thrashed Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Their bid for a seventh English title under Guardiola had appeared to be fading after successive draws with West Ham and Nottingham Forest, but this emphatic win has revived their momentum.
City have now won 29 of their last 32 league matches played in April, underlining their ability to thrive under title-race pressure.
For Chelsea, the defeat extends a worrying slump. Since winning their first four league matches under manager Liam Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca, the Blues have won just one of their last seven, losing three in a row. They remain sixth in the table, four points adrift of the Champions League qualification places.
Chelsea were again without Enzo Fernandez after Rosenior’s controversial decision to drop the Argentine midfielder over comments suggesting a possible summer exit. Lacking energy and cohesion, the hosts rarely threatened. Marc Cucurella saw a clinical finish ruled out for offside, and Pedro Neto forced a sharp save from City goalkeeper Ederson, but those proved rare moments of promise.
The victory ensures City can now target next weekend’s pivotal clash with Arsenal, knowing that three points would pile immense pressure on the leaders.
