Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his support for the elected representatives at the local government level to fulfill their constitutional roles, emphasizing that his opposition lies solely against any attempts to create confusion.

During the inauguration of a newly constructed Local Government House and Staff Training School at the State Secretariat in Agodi on October 3, 2024, Makinde stated, “What I oppose is any effort to create a constitutional lacuna that could lead to discord among different branches of government.” He highlighted the challenges posed by a trust deficit between leaders and citizens, warning that some individuals might exploit this situation to sow disunity or propagate misleading narratives.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with local governments to ensure that the vision of his government is effectively communicated and implemented at the grassroots level. He noted that synergy between the state and local government councils could yield greater achievements.

Makinde revealed that his government has partnered with local governments to enhance 209 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and has equipped an additional 264 centres. He also mentioned the completion of approximately 60 model schools and the construction and renovation of numerous primary school classrooms. However, he acknowledged that further efforts are needed and pledged continued support for local governments throughout the state.

Regarding the newly inaugurated building, Makinde stated that it would provide a more conducive workspace for local government employees, thereby increasing their productivity. He also promised to renovate several deteriorating structures within the State Secretariat before the end of his term.

In a significant announcement, the governor approved the conversion of all ad hoc workers in the local government areas to permanent staff. He instructed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Ademola Ojo, to adhere to due process within four weeks and conduct interviews for the affected staff to secure their permanent positions.

During the event, Mr. Ambali Adetunji, the National President of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), commended Governor Makinde for prioritizing the welfare of workers in the state. Represented by Mr. Abimbola Babalola, the South-West Vice Chairman of NULGE, he noted that the newly constructed facility would uplift the morale of local government staff and that the training school would enhance their professional development.NAN
