The North East Development Association (NEDA), has called on the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to immidiately swing into action by making sure that the
N36 billion so far released to the commission work for the people.
According to the group, traditional rulers and other people in the region have been complaining that since the inauguration of the management of the North East Development Commission on 8th May, 2019, the people have not feel the impact.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the Secretary General of the North East Development Association (NEDA), Comrade Abubakar Umar Bitako, said as a group that participated actively in the birth of NEDC, they are worried that the people are not feeling the impact of the commission despite the N36 billion so far deposited in the account of the organization.
“We want to see things taking place. We want to see the NEDC helping the people. We don’t have only Boko Haram problem in the North East. We have farmers and Herders clashes mostly in Adamawa and Taraba states.
“We want to see food stuff been shared to the people. We want bedding provided to our people. We want our people to have access to hospitals and schools.
“We are not saying they have not done anything but what they are doing is not open. We want their activities to take place at the regional office and at the state offices. IDPs are still there at the camps. They should be in their communities or houses.
“If you go to the traditional rulers, they will ask what is the NEDC waiting for? The same thing majority of the masses in the North East are complaining that thugs are not happening,” Bitako said.
“We know the heads. They are seasonable technocrats who have done well in their various field. But then, we have confidence in them. We want to see their activities.
“We want them to go into action. They have wonderful blueprint like taking care of the displaced and deradicalization of the people. But then, we want to see things happening. Children in the IDPs camps should be relocated to other safer zones.
“They were inaugurated 8th May, 2019. From 8th May to now, N10 billion was released to them and subsequently, N26 billion was also released in the 2019 budget. So it you add N10 billion to N26 billion that is N36 billion. So, the commission should immidiately take care of the people,” the group said while commending president Muhammadu Buhari for working hard to ensure peace return to the North East through effective humanitarian services to the people.
