Leadership Tussle: Police Takes Over As NSCDC Withdraws From Rivers NLC Secretariat

Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have taken over the state secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) following the withdrawal of operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

When LEADERSHIP visited the NLC secretariat, located along Igboukwu Street in the D/Line area of Port Harcourt, there were no fewer than seven patrol vehicles with over 20 stern-looking policemen in front of the facility.

The NSCDC first sealed the facility last Thursday, following leadership Tussle between the incumbent state NLC Chairman, Comrade Beatrice Itubo and her deputy, Comrade Emecheta Chuku.

Some members of the State Administrative Council (SAC) had met last Wednesday and appointed Emecheta as Acting State Chairman of NLC, following Itubo’s emergence as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

The development, LEADERSHIP gathered did not go down with with the Chairman and majority of the state officials of NLC, which has over 30 affiliate unions, prompting the invitation of the NSCDC and later the Nigerian Police.

Speaking with newsmen before their withdrawal, NSCDC spokesman in the state, Ayodele Olufemi, said they closed the gate of the NLC secretariat to avoid breakdown of law and order.

Olufemi stated said two labour leaders were laying claim to the chairmanship of the union after the former chairman, Itubo got the LP governorship candidate.
