Governor Alex Otti, the party’s leader and the Governor of Abia State, made this announcement during a meeting with key stakeholders, including members of the Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee (NWC), and organised labour leaders, in Abuja on Sunday. He described the engagement as fruitful, focusing on the organisation of congresses from ward levels to the national convention, membership validation, and the registration of new members.

Membership Validation and National Convention

Governor Otti revealed that a committee has been established to oversee the membership validation process, with preparations underway for a national convention that aims to propel the party forward. He expressed satisfaction with the recent uploading of the names of the NWC leaders to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website, marking a significant step in the party’s organisational efforts.

Addressing Internal Challenges

Acknowledging recent challenges, Governor Otti addressed the departure of former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the defection of several National Assembly members and interim national committee officials. While expressing regret over these developments, he affirmed the Labour Party’s resilience and commitment to resolving internal issues.

“A reconciliation committee will be constituted to engage with aggrieved members who are willing to return and adhere to the party’s rules,” he stated. Additionally, he has personally called upon Julius Abure and his team to reconcile and rejoin the party for the sake of unity.

Upcoming Elections and Coalition Considerations

Regarding the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections, Governor Otti indicated that the party may abstain from participation due to time constraints. However, he assured that the Labour Party would actively engage in subsequent elections.

On Peter Obi’s decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the governor expressed best wishes for his future endeavours. He also addressed questions about the possibility of joining another coalition, asserting that the Labour Party is already a coalition and has no plans to affiliate with any additional groups.

Legal Recognition of Leadership

In a recent ruling, the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court recognised the Nenadi Usman-led interim leadership as the legitimate governing body of the Labour Party. Following this court decision, INEC uploaded the names of Ms Usman and her team on its portal, highlighting the legal endorsement of the current leadership.

### Conclusion

As the Labour Party embarks on this critical phase of restructuring, the upcoming congresses are expected to play a pivotal role in consolidating its base and preparing for future electoral contests. Governor Otti’s leadership appears focused on fostering unity and resilience within the party, ensuring it remains a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

With the congresses on the horizon, stakeholders and party members alike are poised to engage in a transformative process aimed at revitalising the Labour Party for the challenges ahead.
