Killings Continue In Nigeria, Hersdmen Invade Benue Farms, 11 Killed

Eleven persons have been killed while scores of others escape with varying degrees of injuries as marauding herdsmen attacked farmers on their farms at Waya Community in Kwande local governments area of Benue State. 

One of the locals who identify himself as Akerigba said by a telephone that the herdsmen invaded  Waya community in Jato Aka at around 11am when the victims were in their farms killing them silently from one farm to the other.

He said 11 corpses have been recovered while scores of others sustained various degrees of injuries.

“The family of five were also wiped out completely including a one and 3 years old babies during the attacked,” Akerigba said.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Bunue State, Catherine Anene, who confirmed the killings said they are yet to get the full details of what happened.

Also confirming the attacked, the Council Chairman of the area, Mrs Tartor Chianson, said the herdsmen invaded Waya Community in the morning when everyone was in the farm, killing several people working on their farms.

“We alerted the security Agency immediately but the herdsmen fled and eight corpses were recovered  with the help of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) who are still in the bush searching for more corpses,” she said.

According to her,  five Wards in her local government including  Mbachura, Kumakwagh, Yaav, Moon and Mbaikyur  are under siege.

“My people went to the farms to prepare the land for planting  and they were ambush and killed differently in their farms at Waya community close to Anwase by the marauding herdsmen without provocation.

“Few days ago, the herdsmen invaded some communities and set a lot of houses on fire. They also kidnap some other persons, took away their machines and later brought their mutilated bodies and dumped in the communities,” the council chairman said.

She said from January to date, over 50 persons have lost their lives in the same local government following the persistent attacks and invasion of farm land by the herdsmen.

“Right now, I am battling with over 3000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). So, I want to appeal to the government at all levels and well meaning individuals to come to the plight of the displaced persons in Kwande.”

“I am now on my way to Makurdi to laiase with the Security adviser to see how we can bury the corpses we have  recover so far,” the Chairman said.
