Sports experts have denounced calls to convert the Kano Pillars stadium into a market for displaced traders from Sabon Gari Market Kano.
Kano Focus reports that part of the stadium’s parking space has already been converted into shops.
The head, department of Physical Health Education (PHE), Bayero University Kano (BUK)) Ahmad Makama Getso said demolishing the stadium will be a disaster for sports in Kano.
Mr Getso said the stadium not only boosts sports development in Kano but provide an avenue to distract young people from crimes.
He added that sports help in averting some minor illnesses that generate into major diseases.

“The elderly who suffer from illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure go to the stadium for exercise.
“A stadium is also an avenue for government to generate revenue if only it will put proper measures to facilitate its running.” Mr Getso said.
Also, a lecturer with Federal College of Education (FCE) Kano, Isyaku Labaran Fagge said both stadiums and markets provide valuable services to the society.
“Why can’t displaced traders find somewhere else to do their business?
“There are market spaces everywhere.” He said.
Mr Fagge however said there is nothing experts can do other than advice the government.
Neither the Kano state governor, nor the sports commissioner have reacted to the calls.
