The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kaduna State chapter, has decided to suspend its five-day warning strike, following a fruitful discussion with government officials.

In a statement released on Monday night by the State Chairman, Comrade Ishaku Yahaya, the union expressed satisfaction with the level of seriousness and commitment demonstrated by the government.

Elanza News reports that this led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties.

“We have resolved to suspend the 5-day warning strike to allow for further negotiations and give the government an opportunity to fulfill its commitments as outlined in the MoU,” the statement obtained by Elanza News reads.

The strike, which commenced on July 8, 2024, aimed to address the nurses’ demands for an improved welfare package.

The union reported a remarkable success rate and 100% compliance during the strike.

Ishaku Yahaya expressed his appreciation for the resilience, determination, and overwhelming support shown by the members of NANNM.

He emphasized that the suspension of the strike should not be mistaken for a resolution, stating, “If the promises made are not fulfilled, we will not hesitate to resume the industrial action at the appropriate time.”

Elanza News gathered that the State Administrative Council (SAC) acknowledged the unwavering support of the nurses and assured them of their commitment to represent their interests without bias or hesitation.
