The Liverpool captain led his side to the Premier League title, playing an integral role in their success from the heart of midfield.

He also spearheaded the #playerstogether initiative during the coronavirus lockdown which saw players team up with NHS Charities Together to raise money for the NHS.

Henderson, 30, set the tone for the Reds throughout the course of the season and has now been voted player of the year by the country’s football writers.

He takes the award, following in the footsteps of Liverpool icons Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard, ahead of a number of other contenders, most notably Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne.

“I’d like to say how appreciative I am of the support of those who voted for me and the Football Writers’ Association in general,” said Henderson.
