Gunmen Kidnap NASIEC Scribe, Demands 30 Million

Administrative Secretary of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) Barr. Mohammed Abubakar Opu, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

He was whisked away by the kidnappers from his residence at Bakin Rijiya village along Lafia – Shendam road, after firing gunshots in the early hours of Wednesday, yesterday.

A source close to the family told our correspondent that the kidnappers contacted the family of their victim as they initially demanded 30 million naira and later beat the price down to 6 million naira.

Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Ramhan Nansel in a statement in Lafia, confirmed the development.

According to ASP Nansel, the Commissioner of Police in the state Mr. Adesina Soyemi, had responded swiftly by leading a detachment of Police personnel comprising the Anti Kidnapping unit, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit and other tactical units of the Command to the scene of the incident.

He added that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department had also been directed to immediately move to the scene and conduct a comprehensive investigation to unveil the faces of the abductors as well as ensure the safe release of the victim.

“The Commissioner of Police is hereby calling on anyone with useful information that will aid the investigation” he said.
