The Arewa Renaissance Movement has demanded the immediate resignation of the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, over what it described as an “insensitive and unpatriotic” housewarming ceremony held amid national grief.

The group’s spokesperson, Umar Abba, made the call in a voice note sent to Elanza on Saturday night.

Abba said the nation was still mourning the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and another incident in Kwara and Niger State when Basiru chose to celebrate at his residence in Oshogbo.

According to him, such conduct shows “a disturbing lack of humanity” by a senior official of the ruling party.

He said, “We are therefore calling for his immediate resignation. We believe political leaders must be responsible and sensitive to national realities.

“There have already been several concerns about the conduct of the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru. In fact, there are insinuations that he is not fully loyal to the party.”

Abba questioned whether Basiru would have acted similarly if his own children had been abducted.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate the matter and for the party to take disciplinary action.

Abba noted that videos from the housewarming had already circulated widely on Facebook and other platforms, further embarrassing the party.

He added that even President Tinubu cancelled a foreign engagement due to the national mood, wondering why Basiru could not show similar restraint.

The group insisted that the APC must demonstrate responsible leadership, especially at a time when the country is grappling with worsening insecurity.
