Ahead of the swearing in of the members of the Police Trust Fund, a
group, Campaign for Equity has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to
reconstitute the board because it concentrates security in a zone.

National coordinator, Oliver Akosa commended former military governor
of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Umar ( rtd.) for speaking out against
what he described as skewed appointments by President Buhari.

Col Umar had warned over what he described as the utter imbalance in
the headship of security services and warned President Buhari to
retrace his steps before Nigeria slides into anarchy.

Akosa in a statement made available to Leadership said the Police
Trust Fund (PTF) board was lopsided as the members were all drawn from
the North West, saying it poses a great security challenge.

According to him, the reason for the setting up of the PTF as
contained in the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Establishment Act, 2019
was to retool policing architecture in Nigeria, adding that to achieve
this, the PTF is expected to ensure a well-funded, well-equipped, and
highly professional Nigeria Police Force in line with international
best practices.

The National Coordinator called on President Buhari to reconstitute
the board saying it is the right thing to do, to avoid the
concentration of police powers in Sokoto State in particular and the
North West in general.

The group lamented that the proper policing architecture Nigeria
yearns for cannot be realised with the present crop of people,
particularly the leadership, who have been appointed by the president
to lead the PTF.

He argued that the full import of federalism does not allow that the
Police Affairs Ministry be headed by someone from Sokoto State, and
the same time have a PTF Executive Secretary from the same Sokoto
State, saying the arrangement smacks of utter disregard for the fine
tenets of federalism.

Furthermore, Akosa said the appointees are mere cronies of the government
who do not have the technical know-how to reform the Nigeria Police
Force, adding that they do not have the expertise to initiate
reforms.

The National Coordinator called on President Buhari to reconstitute
the board saying it is the right thing to do, to avoid the
concentration of police powers in Sokoto State in particular and the
North West in general.
