Enugu Govt. detains man who allegedly chops off wife’s hand

Enugu State Government has detained for prosecution, Mr Sunday Echegi, who allegedly chopped off wife’s left hand, Mrs Chinonso Echegi, in Nsukka Area of the state.

The State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

Enih’s statement underscores Gov Peter Mbah’s administration’s commitment to combating domestic and gender-based violence in Enugu State.

“This zero-tolerance stance is part of the administration’s broader efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, particularly vulnerable populations,” she said.

Enih said the governor’s action demonstrated a strong resolve to address these issues head-on.

“This move not only provides support to the victim but also sends a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Echegi’s alleged brutal act surfaced on social media on Jan. 26.

Enih said that Echegi, who hails from Ibagwa Ani in Nsukka Local Government Area, had allegedly cut off his wife’s hand following a quarrel.

“This is yet another sad development, which we are following up to ensure that justice is done.

“The information we have is that the man in question aimed for the wife’s head during a disagreement, but ended up chopping off the left hand with which she tried to fend off the machete.

“She also sustained injury on the right hand. So, we swung into action immediately we got the information and had him arrested immediately and he is now in police custody,” she said.

The commissioner emphasised that the top priority at the moment was to save the victim’s life and ensure she received the necessary medical attention.

“So, we have moved her to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, where she is currently receiving full medical attention.

“Meanwhile, this is a case the government is taking very seriously.

“The wife of the governor, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, is personally on this matter and has vowed that justice must be served.

“The suspect will be moved to the Police Force Criminal Investigation Department, Enugu today for a thorough investigation.

“From there, the law will take its full course,” Enih said.

“The Enugu State Government is taking a strong stance against domestic and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), as well as child abuse.

“Residents are warned to refrain from such acts, as the current administration will not tolerate them.

“This move aims to protect vulnerable individuals, especially women and children, from harm,” she added.

NAN reports that The Mbah administration has taken a strong stance against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and child abuse since taking office.

This is evident in the numerous arrests, investigations, and ongoing trials for various offenses related to GBV and child abuse.

The administration’s efforts are part of a broader movement to combat GBV and child abuse, which are pervasive issues affecting many communities.(NAN)

Bandits pretending to be EFCC officials abduct hotel guests in Niger

Suspected bandits posing as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly abducted 10 people from White Hill Hotel on Shiroro Road, Chanchaga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.

A security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, quoted intelligence sources as saying that the incident occurred at about 4:58 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2025.

The armed men reportedly stormed the hotel, claiming to be EFCC personnel on an official operation.

It was gathered that the suspects disabled the hotel’s CCTV cameras before entering guests’ rooms one by one and forcibly taking away 10 individuals to an unknown destination,” the report said.

According to the report, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, State Intelligence Department (Acpol SID), confirmed that investigations were ongoing to identify the perpetrators and locate the abducted victims.

“The public has been urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity, as authorities intensify efforts to uncover the details surrounding the attack,” Makama added.

PDP National Youth Frontier Calls for Release ,Justice , Fairness on Comrade Austin Okai

The detention of People’s Democratic Party PDP National Youth Frontier and convener, Comrade Austin Okai is an attempt to malign opposition in Kogi state and deserve urgent attention to stop the trend.

The PDPNYF maintained that the clamping into detention of the PDP House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/ Bassa in the 2023 general elections was the continuous muzzling of oppositions , and an attempt to truncate the growing popularity of the people’s comrade , Austin Okai.

A statement issued on Sunday by the member of the caucus, Jerome Ali stressed the need to halt the Kogi state government from further embarrassing other members of other political parties in the name of defamation and cyber stalking in the state.

He described the detention by the Kogi state government teleguided legal pronouncement as a slap on democracy and it’s norms.

While assuring the state government of victory for Comrade Austin Okai at the end, he said the attempt will not stop the opposition from demanding for accountability amidst misdemeanor of the common resources of the people of Kogi state.

Man beats wife to death over delay in preparing Ramadan food

Bauchi State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a 24-year-old woman, reportedly beaten to death by her 50-year-old husband during a domestic dispute over Ramadan meal preparations.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Wakili, said in a statement on Sunday that the tragic incident occurred on March 1, 2025, at about 11:30 pm in the Fadamam Mada area, near Government Girls College, Bauchi.

The suspect, Alhaji Nuru Isah, a businessman at the Bauchi Central Market, reportedly attacked his second wife, Wasila Abdullahi, after an argument over food ingredients and fruits meant for breaking their Ramadan fast.

The altercation escalated, and Isah allegedly struck Wasila with a cane, causing her to collapse and lose consciousness inside their home.

She was rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her dead.

“Police have arrested the suspect and recovered the cane used in the assault as evidence.

“The victim’s body has been deposited in the mortuary pending an autopsy.

“Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad, has assured the public that justice will be served.

“He also used the opportunity to emphasize the dangers of domestic violence, calling on the community to uphold respect, empathy, and understanding in family life,” the statement added.

The police urged residents to report cases of domestic abuse, stressing that violence within the home is a crime with serious consequences.
