In a bid to strengthen the role of women journalists in promoting security and peace, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Fatima Aliyu, has advocated for comprehensive training for its members.

The initiative aims to equip women journalists with the necessary skills to effectively communicate messages of peace and security within society.

During a courtesy visit by Equal Access International to the Kaduna state chapter of NAWOJ, Comrade Fatima Aliyu emphasised the importance of partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

She highlighted NAWOJ’s extensive platform, comprising over one hundred channels, for disseminating news and reports.

Comrade Daharatu Ahmed Aliyu, the North West representative of NAWOJ, echoed the need for increased enlightenment and understanding of national issues, particularly regarding peace and security.

She called upon international organisations, such as Equal Access International, to extend their support through training programmes and collaborative initiatives across the North West region.

Equal Access International’s Field Coordinator, Mrs Rebecca James Bilai, shed light on the ‘Securing Nigerian Communities’ (SNC) project, operating in selected LGAs across Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, and Kano states.

The project aims to enhance access to information, provide practical tools for violence reduction, and foster social cohesion among conflicting groups.

As the world commemorates the 2024 International Women’s Day, Mrs Rebecca James Bilai urged women to draw inspiration from each other’s achievements.

She stressed the significance of patriotism and active participation in peace-building efforts, irrespective of financial incentives.

The visit by Equal Access International underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing societal challenges.

With initiatives like SNC and the partnership with NAWOJ, there is a concerted effort to empower women journalists and promote peace and security at both local and national levels.
